How to Prepare Your CV Before Schools Return in September
The summer holidays might feel like a time to switch off, but if you’re thinking about a new role this September, now is the perfect opportunity to give your CV a refresh.
Schools begin recruiting well before pupils return, and having an up-to-date CV means you’ll be ready to apply as soon as the right opportunity comes along.
Whether you’re an experienced teacher, an Early Career Teacher (ECT), Teaching Assistant, SEND specialist or school support professional, a strong CV can make all the difference.
Here are our top education CV tips to help you stand out this September.
1. Start With the Basics
It might sound obvious, but make sure all of your contact details are correct.
Double-check your:
- Mobile number
- Email address
- Home location
- LinkedIn profile (if you have one)
There’s nothing more frustrating than missing out on an interview because an employer couldn’t get hold of you.
2. Update Your Most Recent Experience
If you’ve recently completed a placement, worked in a school or gained new qualifications, make sure they’re included.
Recruiters and schools want to see your most up-to-date experience first, so list your roles in reverse chronological order.
Don’t forget to include:
- School name
- Job title
- Dates of employment
- Key responsibilities
- Notable achievements
3. Highlight Your Impact
Rather than simply listing what you did, explain the difference you made.
For example, instead of writing:
“Supported Year 4 pupils.”
Try:
“Provided one-to-one support for pupils with additional needs, helping improve confidence, engagement and classroom participation.”
Showing your impact helps schools understand the value you’ll bring to their team.
4. Include Relevant Skills
Education is about much more than qualifications.
Think about the skills you’ve developed, such as:
- Classroom management
- Behaviour support
- SEND experience
- Lesson planning
- Communication
- Teamwork
- Adaptability
- Safeguarding awareness
Tailor these skills to the type of role you’re applying for.
5. Keep It Clear and Easy to Read
Recruiters often review hundreds of CVs.
A clean, well-structured layout makes it much easier for them to quickly find the information they’re looking for.
Aim for:
- Clear headings
- Bullet points
- Consistent formatting
- No spelling or grammar mistakes
- Around two pages where possible
A simple CV is often far more effective than one that’s overcrowded.
6. Don’t Forget Your Training
Schools value candidates who continue to develop professionally.
Include any recent:
- CPD courses
- Safeguarding training
- SEND qualifications
- Behaviour management training
- First Aid certificates
- Professional development
Even short courses can strengthen your application.
7. Tailor Your CV
One CV doesn’t always suit every role.
If you’re applying for a SEND position, highlight your experience supporting pupils with additional needs.
If you’re applying for a teaching role, focus on curriculum knowledge, classroom management and pupil outcomes.
A tailored CV shows you’ve taken the time to understand the role.
8. Ask Someone to Read It
Before sending your CV, ask someone you trust to read through it.
A fresh pair of eyes can often spot spelling mistakes, formatting issues or missing information that you’ve overlooked.
