Introducing CEO Insights: Navigating the Challenges Facing Education Leaders
By Nick Hurn OBE, Chairman, Schools Mutual Services

Education has never stood still, but few periods in recent history have tested leadership in our schools quite like the one we are living through now.
As someone who has spent decades working across the education sector – most recently as CEO of Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust and now as Chairman and founder of Schools Mutual Services – I have seen first-hand the extraordinary commitment, resilience and moral purpose of education leaders. I have also seen the growing pressures they face; workforce shortages, financial constraints, regulatory demands, wellbeing challenges, and an increasingly complex policy landscape.
It is against this backdrop that I am delighted to launch a brand-new video series: CEO Insights: Navigating the Challenges Facing Education Leaders.
Why this series, and why now?
Over the years, I have had countless conversations with executive leaders, headteachers, governors and policymakers. Despite differences in context – whether schools, trusts, dioceses or local authorities – the themes are remarkably consistent.
Leaders are being asked to do more with less.
They are expected to recruit and retain high-quality staff in an increasingly competitive and fragile labour market.
They are balancing educational excellence with staff wellbeing, financial sustainability and long-term strategic planning.

They are balancing educational excellence with staff wellbeing, financial sustainability and long-term strategic planning.
Yet too often, these challenges are discussed in isolation or reduced to short-term fixes.
This series has been created to do something different.
CEO Insights is an open, honest and practical exploration of the real issues facing education leaders today – and, crucially, the solutions that can support sustainable, values-led leadership for the future.
Who is CEO Insights for?
This series is designed specifically for:
- Education executive leaders
- Headteachers and senior leadership teams
- Trust CEOs, CFOs and governance professionals
- Policy makers and sector influencers
If you are responsible for shaping strategy, leading people, or influencing policy in education, this series is for you.
What will the series cover?
Across the series, I will be sharing insights drawn from my own leadership experience, as well as conversations across the sector. Topics will include:
- The recruitment and retention crisis and how it threatens long-term educational outcomes
- Why traditional supply and recruitment models are no longer fit for purpose
- The true cost of workforce instability – financially, educationally and morally
- Leadership wellbeing and the hidden toll of constant crisis management
- The importance of ethical, not-for-profit solutions in a sector built on public service
- How collaboration, mutuality and long-term thinking can reshape the future of education staffing
This is not about theory. It is about the lived reality of leading in education today.
The role of Schools Mutual Services
The insights shared in this series directly inform the strategic development and future commitment of Schools Mutual Services.
Schools Mutual Services was founded on a simple but powerful belief:
schools deserve a recruitment and supply model that works in their best interests – not against them.
schools deserve a recruitment and supply model that works in their best interests – not against them.
We are proud to be the ONLY not-for-profit recruitment and supply agency dedicated exclusively to the education sector. Every decision we make is guided by the needs of schools, trusts and pupils – not shareholders.
The challenges discussed in CEO Insights are not abstract problems. They are the very reasons Schools Mutual Services exists:
- To reduce costs for schools
- To improve consistency and quality of supply
- To reinvest surplus back into education
- To build a sustainable, ethical alternative to profit-driven agencies
This series will shine a light on how these principles translate into practical action.
A conversation, not a lecture
Perhaps most importantly, CEO Insights is not intended to be a one-way broadcast.
Education leadership thrives on dialogue, shared learning and collective problem-solving. My hope is that this series sparks conversation – in boardrooms, staffrooms and policy discussions – about how we can better support those leading our schools.
If we are serious about improving outcomes for children and young people, we must first ensure that the systems supporting our leaders are robust, ethical and fit for the future.
Join us
I invite you to watch the series, reflect on the challenges raised, and join the conversation.
Because the future of education leadership matters – and together, we can shape solutions that are worthy of the sector we serve.
