Starting a New Academic Year? Your September Preparation Checklist
For many educators, the summer holidays are a chance to switch off, spend time with family and recharge after another busy school year. But as August draws to a close, it’s completely normal to start thinking about September.
Whether you’re returning to a school you know well, starting somewhere new, or taking on supply work for the first time, a little preparation can make those first few days feel much less daunting.
Here are a few simple things you can do before the new term begins.
Get organised
There’s nothing worse than feeling rushed on your first day back. Spend a little time getting everything ready before September arrives.
Check that you’ve got your planner, stationery and any resources you’ll need for your first week. If you’re starting at a new school, it’s worth making a note of key dates, arrival times and any information you’ve already been sent.
A little organisation now can make a big difference later.
Familiarise yourself with your new school
If you’re beginning a new role, every school has its own way of doing things.
Take some time to read through any information you’ve been given about safeguarding, behaviour policies and the school day. You don’t need to know everything before you walk through the door, but having a basic understanding will help you feel more confident.
Think about your routine
After a few weeks away from early alarms, getting back into a routine can take a little adjustment.
Try easing yourself back into your normal sleep pattern, plan your journey in advance and give yourself plenty of time on your first morning. Removing those little worries can help you start the day feeling much calmer.
Remember to look after yourself
The start of a new academic year can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming.
Be kind to yourself. You don’t have to have everything perfect from day one. Every class, every school and every year is different, and it takes time to settle back into the rhythm of school life.
Don’t forget to take breaks, ask questions when you need to and celebrate the small wins during those first few weeks.
If you’re working in supply…
Supply work offers flexibility and variety, but being prepared is key.
Make sure your availability is up to date, keep your phone nearby and have your essentials ready to go. A well-packed bag with stationery, ID and anything else you might need means you’ll be ready when opportunities arise.
