Supporting Schools with Confidence: Putting Facts Before Fear
Across the North East, South East and West Midlands, schools and multi-academy trusts are working harder than ever to secure high-quality supply staff whilst managing increasingly challenging budgets.
As Schools Mutual Services continues to expand across these regions, we’ve become aware that some schools are hearing conflicting messages about how supply recruitment works. We believe it’s important to replace speculation with facts.
The reality is simple.
Supply teachers and support staff are independent professionals. They choose where they register, who they work with and which assignments they accept.
There is no hidden or exclusive workforce owned by individual agencies.
Instead, there are thousands of talented education professionals who make decisions based on how they are treated, how well they are paid and whether they feel respected and supported.
That is exactly why Schools Mutual Services was created.
As the UK’s only not-for-profit supply agency dedicated exclusively to education, our purpose is fundamentally different.
Rather than maximising shareholder returns, we exist to support schools.
That means:
- Fair, transparent pay for educators
- Lower costs for schools
- Outstanding compliance and safeguarding
- Long-term partnerships
- Reinvestment into education rather than profit
We don’t believe schools should choose a recruitment partner based on claims about exclusive access to candidates.
Any behaviour by a supply agency that seeks to create fear, imply ownership of educators, suggest that schools will lose access to staff, or pay extortionate finders fees, or pressure decision-makers through misinformation should be treated as a clear red flag by any school or multi-academy trust.
Instead, ask questions such as:
- How much are you charging?
- How much does the educator actually receive?
- How robust is your safeguarding?
- Who owns the organisation?
- Where does any surplus go?
These are the questions that really matter.
Schools Mutual Services is owned and governed by education leaders and remains committed to providing schools with an ethical, transparent and sustainable alternative that delivers exceptional people and outstanding value.
