Schools Mutual Services Launches Across the West Midlands – A New Ethical Era for Supply Staffing
For years, schools across the West Midlands have faced the same challenge.
How do you secure high-quality supply staff quickly, remain fully compliant with Department for Education procurement requirements, and ensure every pound possible is invested back into children rather than excessive agency profits?
From September 2026, schools across the region will have a genuine alternative.
Schools Mutual Services is proud to officially launch its West Midlands operation, bringing our ethical, school-led and not-for-profit approach to schools, academies and trusts across the region.
This is far more than simply opening another recruitment office.
It represents the creation of a regional partnership built by education, for education.
A Permanent Presence in the Heart of the West Midlands
Our new West Midlands hub provides a dedicated base to support schools throughout the region.
Leading this exciting new chapter are Maddison and Sussan, who together bring extensive education recruitment knowledge, real-life school and classroom experience, and a genuine passion for supporting schools and supply colleagues alike.
Over recent weeks, they have been working closely with our partner trusts and education professionals to establish a strong bank of teachers, teaching assistants and specialist support staff, ready to support schools from the beginning of the new academic year. This work will continue throughout the summer.
Every candidate joining Schools Mutual Services shares our commitment to delivering excellent outcomes for children while being treated fairly, professionally and with respect.
A Different Kind of Supply Agency
Schools Mutual Services was established because school leaders believed there had to be a better way.
Rather than operating to maximise shareholder returns, we exist solely to support education.
As the UK’s only not-for-profit supply agency dedicated exclusively to education, every decision we make is driven by one simple question:
“Is this in the best interests of schools, pupils and our supply colleagues?”
That commitment means we offer:
- Lower operating margins
- Greater transparency
- Fair pay aligned to national pay scales wherever possible
- PAYE employment
- Enhanced pension contributions
- Health and wellbeing support
- Long-term partnerships with schools, not transactional relationships
When schools spend less on agency costs, they have more available to invest directly into teaching and learning.
That’s exactly how education should work.
Working Together Through Strong Governance
One of the most exciting aspects of our West Midlands launch is the establishment of our regional Governance Board.
Working alongside respected Multi-Academy Trust leaders, the Board will help ensure Schools Mutual Services continues to develop around the real needs of West Midlands schools.
This collaborative approach means schools themselves will help shape future services, standards and priorities.
Education deserves solutions designed by education professionals, not simply for education professionals.
Supported by Education Leaders
Our launch has already received strong backing from education leaders across the region.
“The Education Exchange West Midlands and Summit Learning Trust are delighted to be working with Schools Mutual Services. This partnership represents an exciting opportunity to deliver real value for schools and colleges across our West Midlands region.
By establishing an ethical, not-for-profit supply staffing solution with Schools Mutual Services, we can deliver genuine value for schools, reduce the costs associated with agency staffing, and reinvest more resources back into education.
Just as importantly, this approach will help improve the quality and consistency of supply provision, ensuring schools across the West Midlands have access to trusted professionals who understand the needs of our communities.”
Vince Green
CEO, Summit Learning Trust
These words perfectly capture why Schools Mutual Services exists.
Together, we can improve quality, reduce unnecessary costs and create a more sustainable workforce for education.
Fully Compliant Through the GCA Framework
Schools Mutual Services is also delighted to have secured a place on the new GCA Framework, providing schools and trusts with a fully compliant procurement route that aligns with the Department for Education’s procurement requirements.
For schools, this means:
- Fully compliant procurement
- Transparent pricing
- Pre-agreed terms and conditions
- Faster procurement processes
- Confidence that public money is being spent responsibly
Combined with our ethical operating model, schools no longer have to choose between compliance and value.
They can have both.
Looking Ahead
As September approaches, our focus remains simple.
We will continue to:
- Build an outstanding network of supply teachers and support staff.
- Develop strong partnerships with schools and trusts.
- Demonstrate that education recruitment can work differently.
Schools Mutual Services has already helped schools across England save millions of pounds while improving the experience of both schools and supply colleagues.
Now, we’re proud to bring that same approach to the West Midlands.
