Teachers, It’s Half Term – You Deserve a Break Too! 💜

To all the teachers, teaching assistants and education staff out there, you’ve made it to October half term!

The first half term of the academic year is officially over, and what a busy few weeks it’s been!

From getting to know new pupils and settling into classroom routines to lesson planning, marking, parents’ evenings and everything in between, September and October can feel like a whirlwind.

And while we know how much you love what you do, we also know that working in education isn’t always easy.

So, before you start thinking about everything that needs doing before November, here’s a little reminder from all of us at Schools Mutual Services.

You deserve a break too.

Your To-Do List Can Wait

We know how tempting it can be to use half term to catch up on everything you haven’t had time to do.

That pile of marking? The lesson plans for next term? The classroom displays you’ve been meaning to update?

There’s always something else that could be done.

But here’s the thing – you don’t have to spend your entire half term working.

You’ve spent the last several weeks supporting pupils, encouraging them, helping them overcome challenges and making sure they have everything they need to succeed.

Now it’s time to give yourself a little of that same care and attention.

And if you do need to get some schoolwork done, that’s okay too. Just remember to make time for yourself along the way.

It’s Okay to Do Absolutely Nothing!

Sometimes, the best half-term plans are no plans at all.

You don’t need to fill every day with activities or feel guilty for having a quiet afternoon.

Whether you’re spending time with family, heading out for an autumn walk, catching up with friends or simply enjoying a cup of tea while it’s still hot, make time for the things that make you happy.

Here are a few little reminders for your half-term break:

  • ☕ Enjoy a slow morning. No rushing out of the door, no school bell and hopefully a chance to finish your morning coffee!
  • 🍂 Get some fresh air. An autumn walk can be a lovely way to clear your head after a busy few weeks.
  • 📚 Read something just for you. Not a lesson plan, school policy or teaching resource!
  • 💜 Spend time with your favourite people. Catch up with the friends and family you might not have seen as much during term time.
  • 💤 Rest without feeling guilty. You don’t need to earn a break by being productive.

And remember, everyone’s idea of relaxing looks different. Do whatever works for you!

Remember, You’re Making More of a Difference Than You Realise

Working in education can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be demanding.

Some days, you might leave school feeling like you’ve achieved everything you set out to do.

Other days? You might wonder whether you’ve made any difference at all.

But it’s often the little things that matter most.

The pupil who finally understands something they’ve been struggling with.

The child who feels comfortable enough to ask you for help.

The quiet student who starts putting their hand up.

Or simply being that familiar, friendly face a pupil looks forward to seeing each morning.

Those moments matter. And so do you.

Whether you’re a teacher, teaching assistant, SEND support worker, cover supervisor or supply educator, the work you do makes a difference.

Even on the days when it doesn’t feel like it.

Looking After Yourself Matters Too

As an educator, you’re often so busy looking after everyone else that your own wellbeing can end up at the bottom of the list.

But your health, happiness and work-life balance are important too.

At Schools Mutual Services, we believe education professionals deserve to feel supported, appreciated and valued.

That’s why, as a school-owned, not-for-profit recruitment service, we’re committed to putting people first.

Alongside helping teachers and support staff find opportunities in local schools, we offer our registered candidates access to benefits including:

  • Health and wellbeing support.
  • 24/7 access to GP services.
  • Mental health and counselling support.
  • Dedicated consultants who are here to listen and help.
  • Ongoing CPD and professional development opportunities.

Because we know there’s more to being an educator than what happens in the classroom.

You’re not just a teacher or teaching assistant. You’re a person too, and your wellbeing matters.

Enjoy Your Half Term – You’ve Earned It!

Before you know it, the classrooms will be busy again, the school runs will restart and the countdown to Christmas will begin!

But for now, we hope you get the chance to slow down, recharge and enjoy some well-deserved time for yourself.

Whether you’ve got a week full of plans or you’re looking forward to doing very little, we hope your half term is exactly what you need it to be.

And if you’re a supply teacher working through the week, or an educator who doesn’t have the whole holiday off, we hope you still find a little time to rest and recharge.

From everyone at Schools Mutual Services, thank you for everything you do for our schools, pupils and communities.

Have a lovely October half term! 💜

And remember, when you’re ready to think about your next teaching opportunity, our friendly team is always here to help.

Thinking About Your Next Teaching Opportunity?

Half term can also be a good time to think about what you’d like from the rest of the academic year.
