JOB OVERVIEW

Location: Washington, Tyne and Wear
Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time
Role: Behaviour Teaching Assistant – KS1, 1:1 Support

Schools Mutual Services is looking for a caring, patient and confident Behaviour Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Washington.

This is a rewarding one-to-one role, supporting a child in Key Stage 1 who requires additional help with their behaviour, emotions and engagement in the classroom.

For the right person, this is a fantastic opportunity to make a genuine difference. You’ll be there to provide consistency, encouragement and reassurance, helping the child manage their emotions, build positive relationships and get the most out of their time at school.

No two days will necessarily look the same, so we’re looking for someone who can stay calm, adapt their approach and understand that sometimes challenging behaviour is a child’s way of communicating what they need.

What will you be doing?

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support to a KS1 pupil.
  • Helping the child manage their emotions and behaviour throughout the school day.
  • Building a positive and trusting relationship with the pupil.
  • Supporting them to engage with classroom activities and learning.
  • Using positive behaviour strategies to encourage progress.
  • Helping with transitions and changes to routine.
  • Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team.
  • Providing a calm and consistent approach when the child is finding things difficult.
  • Encouraging confidence, independence and positive relationships with others.
  • Supporting the child’s wellbeing and ensuring they feel included in school life.

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Have experience supporting children with challenging behaviour, SEMH or additional needs.
  • Are confident providing one-to-one support.
  • Have a calm, patient and understanding approach.
  • Can build strong and positive relationships with children.
  • Are resilient and able to remain composed in challenging situations.
  • Are enthusiastic, reliable and ready to get involved in school life.
  • Understand the importance of safeguarding and putting the child’s wellbeing first.

Experience within a school is beneficial, but we would also be interested in hearing from candidates with relevant experience from youth work, care, SEND, mentoring or other child-focused settings.
