Halloween Fun for the Classroom and at Home This Half-Term! ๐
Halloween is just around the corner, and with October half-term coming up, it’s the perfect time to enjoy a little seasonal fun!
Whether you’re a teacher looking for some easy classroom activities before the holidays, or a parent wondering how to keep the children entertained during half-term, we’ve put together a few ideas to help.
The best part? You don’t need to spend a fortune or spend hours preparing. Sometimes the simplest activities are the ones children enjoy the most!
๐จ Get Creative with Halloween Crafts
Who doesn’t love a bit of arts and crafts?
Halloween is a great excuse to get the paints, glue and coloured paper out. Plus, it’s a lovely way to let children use their imagination.
Here are a few easy ideas:
- Paper plate pumpkins: All you need is a paper plate, orange paint and some black paper to make a funny or spooky face.
- Cotton wool ghosts: A simple activity that’s great for younger children.
- Handprint spiders: Get creative with paint and turn little handprints into Halloween spiders.
- Autumn leaf pictures: Collect leaves on a walk and use them to make pumpkins, monsters or autumn scenes.
If you’re doing these in the classroom, why not create a Halloween display before everyone heads off for half-term?
๐ป Bring a Little Halloween Fun into Lessons
Halloween activities don’t have to mean putting learning on hold.
There are plenty of ways to bring a seasonal twist into everyday lessons without having to plan something completely different.
A few ideas for the classroom:
- Spooky story writing: Ask children to write their own Halloween adventure. You might be surprised by what they come up with!
- Pumpkin maths: Use pumpkins or Halloween pictures for counting, measuring and simple maths challenges.
- Halloween word searches: A quick and easy activity for practising spelling.
- Design your own monster: Let children draw a monster and write a few sentences describing it.
These are also handy activities for supply teachers who want something fun and engaging to do with their class in the lead-up to half-term.
๐งช A Little Spooky Science!
If you’re looking for something a bit different, why not try a Halloween-themed science experiment?
One easy favourite is the fizzing pumpkin experiment.
All you need is some bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, orange food colouring and a suitable container.
Add the bicarbonate of soda and colouring, then slowly pour in the vinegar and watch the mixture fizz!
It’s a fun way to get children asking questions about what happens when different ingredients are mixed together.
Just make sure experiments are supervised and suitable for the children’s ages.
๐ Half-Term Fun That Doesn’t Cost a Fortune
Once the school holidays arrive, keeping children entertained for a whole week can sometimes feel like a challenge!
But you don’t need to have something big planned every day.
Here are a few simple ideas to try at home:
- Head out on an autumn walk: Wrap up warm, collect some colourful leaves and see what signs of autumn you can spot.
- Decorate a pumpkin: Painting pumpkins can be just as much fun as carving them, especially for younger children.
- Do some Halloween baking: Spooky biscuits or cupcakes are always a good idea!
- Organise a Halloween treasure hunt: Hide a few treats or clues around the house.
- Have a cosy film afternoon: Sometimes a blanket, some popcorn and a family-friendly film are all you need.
And remember, not every activity needs to be Halloween-themed. Autumn crafts, outdoor games and cosy reading sessions are lovely alternatives too.
๐ A Little Reminder for Teachers This Half-Term
We couldn’t talk about October half-term without mentioning the teachers, teaching assistants and school staff who have worked so hard since September.
The first half of the autumn term is always a busy one. Between settling pupils into routines, planning lessons, supporting children and everything else that comes with working in education, there’s certainly plenty going on!
So, while it’s lovely to plan fun activities for the children, don’t forget to make some time for yourself too.
Whether that’s spending time with family, getting out for a walk, catching up with friends or simply enjoying a morning without an alarm, you’ve earned it.
The lesson planning can wait a little while!
