JOB OVERVIEW

Location: Houghton-le-Spring
Start date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, long-term supply opportunity
Salary: Competitive rate of pay, dependent on experience

Schools Mutual Services is seeking an outgoing, caring and dependable Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Houghton-le-Spring.

This is a full-time, long-term opportunity working closely with an individual child who has epilepsy. The successful candidate will provide dedicated support throughout the school day, helping the child to access learning, participate in activities and enjoy school safely and confidently.

Due to the nature of the role, candidates must have previous epilepsy awareness/training and First Aid training. You will need to be confident in recognising and responding appropriately to seizures and following the child’s individual healthcare and safety procedures.

This is an active role, so we’re looking for someone who is outgoing, energetic and prepared to be on their feet throughout the day! You’ll be supporting the child both inside and outside the classroom, encouraging them to participate fully in school life while providing reassurance and appropriate support when required.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Previous epilepsy awareness or epilepsy-specific training.
  • Current or relevant First Aid training.
  • Confidence in recognising and responding appropriately to seizures in line with the child’s individual healthcare plan and school procedures.
  • A genuine passion for working with children.
  • A caring, patient and reassuring approach.
  • An outgoing and energetic personality.
  • The confidence to provide effective one-to-one support.
  • The ability to remain calm and act appropriately when required.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • A willingness to be active and on your feet throughout the school day.
  • A reliable, adaptable and professional approach.
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and supporting the child’s wellbeing.

Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or one-to-one support worker within a primary school would be highly beneficial.
